Question: The battery in my 1998 Subaru Legacy keeps going dead. I have replaced the battery and the alternator, and the battery still keeps going dead.

Answer: Your problem may be an excessive draw on the battery when the vehicle is not running. This draw is called a parasitic draw. A small amount of electricity is needed to run the clock and computer memory. The maximum amount of draw should be about 30 miliamps, any more than that will drain the battery at a higher rate than normal use of the car will recharge. The charging system should be tested, even with a new alternator, as you could have an electrical problem preventing the electrical current from reaching the battery. Proper diagnosis will prevent the unnecessary replacement of good components.
